Kirkburton

Kirkburton is a large village approximately 5 miles from Huddersfield. The main village is based on North Road which is home to many different shops, takeaways, hairdressers and the Post Office. Parking is very limited in the village, but it is free when you finally find a spot.

Tescos would like to build a new Tesco Express on the site of a former petrol station. This move has been heavily protested by the locals and was rejected by Kirklees, but this decision has now been overruled by the government.

Children are educated at Kirkburton First, Kirkburton Middle and Shelley College.

There is a voluntary group which provides all residents and businesses in Kirkburton with the "Burton Bulletin" which is a quarterly publication featuring articles of interest to the villages. The Bulletin is backed by the Kirkburton and Highburton Community Association which is another voluntary organisation which runs the Village Hall and the groups which use it.

There is also the Kirkburton Business Association which meets on a regular basis and raises money for local causes.

Highburton

Highburton is a mainly residential area and is part of the village of Kirkburton.

There are 2 pubs - The Smiths Arms and The White Swan. The only other amenity is Highburton Co-op which is a general grocer and newsagents.

Huddersfield Bus services 81 and 83 go from Huddersfield to Scissett or Denby Dale via Highburton approximately every 30 minutes or 1 hour depending on the time of day.

Highburton First School educates children from Reception to Year 5. Children then move on to Kirkburton Middle School and finally Shelley College.

Scholes

Scholes is a village just outside Holmfirth in the Holme Valley near Huddersfield. It has a junior and infant school, playgroup, chapel, post office/shop, pub, 2 hairdressers and a fish and chip shop. It is right on the edge of beautiful countryside and there are some wonderful walks from the village. The town of Holmfirth is a short bus ride or decent walk down the hill.

Longwood

Longwood is a village hiding in the hills of Huddersfield and is best known for Longwood Tower. Hardly a tower it is still of historical interest and a local campaign is currently fighting to restore and protect it.

New developments have sprung up in Longwood in the past few years and it is fast become a lively place once again. In the past it has boasted primary schools, post office and several shops but these are long gone.

A quiet place to live (apart from rush hour when the 'rat run' travellers speed through) it is a lovely village with local amenities such as playgroups, coffee mornings and even allotments for the gardeners amongst you!

Netherton

Netherton is a village approx 2 miles south-west of Huddersfield and is situated on the road to Meltham.

There are several take-aways in the village, including:

The Tasty House (Chinese)
Chi Chini (Pizza)
Netherton Bismilla (Curry)

The village also hosts the locally famous Hinchcliffe's Farm shop and restaurant. Hinchcliffe's have won several awards for their sausages and steaks and were even requested to make a wedding cake out of pork pies.

One thing not many people know is that there is a railway tunnel under the village. The disused Meltham branch line, which closed in 1965, has three main tunnels between Lockwood and Meltham, the longest of which runs under Netherton. More information is available on Wikipedia.

While visiting Hinchliffe's farm why not take time to see its array of exotic aminals including wooley alpacas.

Honley

Honley is in the Holme Valley, roughly 3.5 miles south of Huddersfield. After Holmfirth, it is the 2nd largest village in the valley and has three schools (infant, junior and secondary), a doctor's surgery and a library as well as several good shops and restaurants, including the well known (nice but pricey) Mustard and Punch.

Honley has a picturesque centre around Westgate and Church Street. The latter is cobbled and looks like an alternative location for the Hovis advert. There are plenty of traditional weaver's cottages in the centre, but as you leave this area the architecture becomes more commonplace, the majority of modern day Honley having been built during the 1960s and 1970s. The village continues to expand to this day, with several new developments having been completed in the last few years.

There are three traditional festivals which take place in the village: the Honley Feast in the autumn; the Christmas Fair and Market in early December; and the biggest and best of all, the Honley Show in June, which actually takes place at Farnley Tyas these days since the show outgrew its field in Honley a few years ago.

Linthwaite

Linthwaite is an unusual village to the South West of Huddersfield on the A62 as it doesn't have a village centre. there is the local Coop and Post Office as well as an unusual amount of takeways along Manchester Road but the church sits on the top of the hill next to Colne Valley High School.
It does have the Sair Inn though, a pub at the top of Hoyle Ing well worth a visit for its fine ale and good collection of village characters. Other hostileries include the Royal Oak and Coach and Horses on Manchester Road and th'Alma across from the Church on Gilroyd Lane.
Linthwaite like alot of the Colne Valley has its share of Crown Green bowlling enthusiasts with four crowns, three of them supporting league teams, Broad Oak, Linthwaite and Linthwaite Hall.

Packhorse Centre

The Packhorse Centre has several useful shops and is a good route to use when going from the railway station to the University especially on rainy days. Many of the shops have changed over the years but the Merrie England cafe has been there all the time and changed very little. There are sandwich shops and a newsagent plus 'pound' shops, clothes shops etc.

It was possible to see a glimpse of the Packhorse Centre on Harry Hill's TV Burp when he used a clip from the recent programme about Peter's department store.

Fixby

Fixby

Fixby is a little over two miles from Huddersfield town centre and about the same distance from Brighouse, straddling the border between Kirklees and Calderdale. There's a school and a shop, a pub or two, a golf club, a church and a crematorium. The woods are great for walking the dog, especially in spring when the beeches are waking up and again in the autumn as they prepare for their winter sleep.

Just down from the main entrance to Kingsgate at 15 Cross Church Street, the 88 Noodle Bar has a great selection of bargainous yummy food. You can either eat in or take away.
